Above all, remember that social media shouldn’t be used as a broadcasting channel, it’s a means to interact with people.

If you’re using social media alongside your business, it’s always worth remembering the downside if you get the outbound message wrong – your network of social media followers may contract, and your plugging will be seen purely for what it is.

What you need to do is interact – with Twitter this could involve participating in group discussions with the appropriate hashtags.  If you have something interesting to say on Facebook, it’s a great place to answer questions, put out offers, anything but gratuitously plug your business – on social media, this is the ultimate sin.
